Unani is an ancient form of traditional medicine which has been used to treat a number of diseases for last thousands of years. It refers to a tradition of Greco-Arabic medicine, which is based on the teachings of Greek physician Hippocrates (460-377 BC), and Roman physician Galen, and developed in to an elaborate medical System by Arab and Persian physicians.
How does it work?
The fundamental theory of the Unani System of medicine is based upon:
The four elements: earth, air, water, and fire.
The four natures: cold, hot, wet, and dry.
The four humors: Dam-Blood (which is hot/wet), Balgham-Phlegm (cold/wet), Safra-Yellow bile (hot/dry), and Sauda-Black bile (cold/dry).
The unique feature of the Unani system of medicine to get the diagnosis of a disease through Nabz (Pulse), arrhythmic expansion of arteries which is felt by fingers. It takes help of other methods of diagnosis include examination of Baul (Urine), Baraz (Stool) etc.
What is the scientific basis of Unani?
ilaj bil-ghiza also known as Dieto-therapy is an important fundamental of Unani therapeutics. On the basis of experiments, it has been proved that ailments may be treated by regulating the quantity and quality of the patient's diets. The salient feature of this therapy is to alter the quality of food as far as ingredients and physical state are concerned.
ilaj bil-hawa also known as Climatic therapy is of high significance in many ailments including tuberculosis, the change of climate is must. The ancient physicians were aware that the geographical conditions are responsible for the quality of air. It is an established fact that places at a higher altitude are less polluted as the air is cleaner, that is why in various cases only a change of climate will prove more sufficient to cure an ailment.
