Guillain-Barre Syndrome

GB Syndrome is an autoimmune disorder where the body’s immune system attacks the peripheral nervous system. The common symptoms are weakness and tingling sensation in the legs.

Incidence

  • 1 person in 100,000 persons

Signs and Symptoms

  • Mild to severe weakness in the lower limbs sometimes in the upper body also
  • Sometimes the affected person cannot move the weak muscles at all
  • The symptoms are progressive in nature; Changes can be seen in hours only
  • Most affected person reach maximum degrees of weakness in 2 weeks’ time
  • Pricking or pins sensations in the ankles, fingers or toes
  • Walking or moving difficulties
  • Visual disturbance, double vision
  • Difficulty with bladder and bowel control
  • In adult, blood pressure problem
  • Sometimes breathing difficulties, etc

Types / Variety

  • GB Syndrome can be very mild to profound in intensity.

Causes

  • The actual cause of tis syndrome is not known. It is considered as autoimmune disorder.
  • It can be after bacterial and viral infection.

Diagnosis Making

  • Medical History
  • Physical examination
  • NCV
  • CSF Examination

Treatment / Management

  • Both medical and re-habilitative therapies are required to treat GB Syndrome.

Medical Treatment

  • Intensive medical treatment can cure GB Syndrome. In some cases residual weakness persists for long time and hinders gait efficiency. Plasma exchange and immunoglobin therapy is highly recommended.

Rehabilitative Therapies

  • Physiotherapy is almost essential for all cases.
  • Splinting may be required in selected cases.
  • Use of mobility devices have been observed
  • Psychological support
  • Nutritional support

 
Prognosis

  • Recovery takes long time. Hospitalization may be required for 1-2 weeks. In a few cases residual weakness persists
