First Integrative Workshop on Spasticity Management - 13 December 2015

The Institute for Child Development is proud to announce the First Integrative Workshop on Spasticity Management in cerebral Palsy on the eve of International Disability Day at New Delhi, India.

Date: 13th December, 2015 (Sunday)
Venue:  Sai International Auditorium, Near Nehru Stadium, Lodhi Road, New Delhi
Timing: 8.30 AM to 1.30 PM

Goal
To provide a comprehensive update on treatments available to enhance motor function and ease disability in patients with spasticity and Cerebral Palsy.

Purpose
Present and integrate multidisciplinary perspectives on the management of motor dysfunction in neuromuscular conditions and to aid health care professionals and families of children with disabilities in their roles as advisors, decision makes and caregivers.

Workshop Description
Health care professionals are increasingly challenged to provide treatments that are based on a strong scientific foundation. This workshop will describe the basic and clinical science underlying the Pathophysiology of impairments and functional deficits in children with cerebral palsy and other common neuromuscular disorders. Movement patterns, motor prognosis (effect on motor development) and associated co-morbid conditions will be described as well as techniques for assessing these impairments. Cerebral palsy (CP), and neuromuscular disorders as well as other similar disorders may be discussed. Nationally recognized clinicians and research scientists will present in detail the most effective current options for management of spasticity, contractures, bony deformities, and weakness for ambulatory and non-ambulatory patients. Because a cure for these conditions is mostly lacking, emphasis will also be placed on treatments such as bracing as well as adaptive equipment to enhance participation in the community. Orthopedic surgeries will be described including spinal stabilization, bony osteotomies and muscle- tendon surgery. The risks and benefits of neurosurgical interventions, aimed at alleviating spasticity, such as intrathecal Baclofen pump infusion, selective dorsal rhizotomy and brain stimulation will be described as well as the role of less invasive therapies such as oral medications and Botulinum toxin injections. Finally physical and occupational therapy treatment programs to enhance motor function and to complement surgical treatments will be presented and reviewed. Audience participation will be encouraged by ample time for questions and multiple case studies involving an interdisciplinary panel.

Format
The workshop comprises presentations from leading experts in the field, physical examinations and assessments for a variety of causes including Cerebral Palsy, and Brain Injury. During the workshop, sessions will be organized where personal opinions, research and experiences on the cause and treatment of spasticity problems may be presented and discussed.

Educational Aims
The aims of the workshop are to improve the level of knowledge and skills of the attending health care professionals, with the ultimate goal of improving the treatment of those patients that suffer from spasticity problems. A secondary aim is to promote

  • National / International cooperation and allow participants to develop valuable networks across cultural and country boundaries.
  • Outline the pathophysiological basis of cerebral palsy and the resultant abnormalities of neuromuscular function.
  • Describe techniques to assess the anatomic and functional impairments of patients with cerebral palsy
  • Discuss the pharmacological, surgical and rehabilitative approaches to improving the function and quality of life in patients with cerebral palsy.
